Boundary dissolution for light penetration

Apartments at Plaza de la Merced, 2020

/

This project began when the developer commissioned us to refurbish and renovate a building located in the historic center of Málaga, in a setting as significant as Plaza de la Merced.

Courtyards play a structuring role in the architecture of the historic center. In this case, the three apartments—one on each floor—along with the commercial space on the ground floor, feature interior courtyards that have been enlarged as part of the project, in compliance with current regulations.

Access to the apartments is provided by a bridge that connects them to the elevator core.

The apartments are organized around the courtyards, with fluid transitions between the living room, entrance hall, and kitchen, creating an architectural sequence that reflects a harmonious dialogue between light, space, and texture.

The top floor includes a terrace and an additional room located on the rooftop. Overlooking the Cathedral, this space is conceived as an extension of the home—a place for retreat and contemplation.

The entire project has been developed with meticulous attention to detail.
